A Hand Full of Gendarmes from the Painting Queue

A quick post with a unit of French Gendarmes freshly finished and based.

The models are from Wargames Foundry.  They are on a 100mm by 60mm base.  Five Foundry cavalry on a base is a little bit of a squeeze.  Hence the staggered alignment of the figures.  However, they do better represent heavy armoured cavalry that use weight of impact to rollover their opponents.  The "weight" here is both metaphorical and literal.

Flags are from Pete's Flags.

I have another five Foundry Gendarmes on the table.  The horse flesh is already painted.  I just have to move on to the more interesting livery of the caparisons and men.  However, I have had some miniatures that have jumped ahead in the queue.  More on this in a future post.

Thanks for your time with me.

    1. Thank you Neil. I use a light undercoat instead of my usual black to keep the colours as vibrant as possible.

  3. Super work, Richard! These fellas are inspirational. I have ten sitting out on my workbench on which I need to begin work. I base mine five cavalry to a base too but I use Impetvs stand basing of 120mm x 60mm.

    1. Thank you Jonathan. I did consider 120mm but, rightly or wrongly, decided that I'd rather squeeze the mass troops for greater density on a smaller base.
At the end of the day, the Rejects won't care of it's 100 or 120mm as long they get a game.

    2. As long as all have the same basing, it really doesn’t matter if it is 100 or 120.

  4. Great work and the staggered basing highlights the figures even better in my opinion. Great choice of colours too.

    1. Thank you Lawrence. I think that, sometimes, I spend too long deciding on colours. It is nice to know that the time taken is worth it.

  5. Lovely job, I have seen a few gamers using the 100mm frontage and I really like it, a little more kinder to a 6x4 than the 120mm and aesthetically more pleasing than the 80mm I am presently using.

    1. Thank you Norm. As 6x4 is my default it does work nicely.

  9. Beautifully painted gendarmes, Richard. I'm very tempted getting some of these figures - particularly after seeing yours.

  10. They look great, and I like the arrangement on the base, gives an imposing density and each noble rider clearly jostling to be out in front, for his reputation and the 'gloire'..

    1. Thank you James. My painting speed means that I don't get many done, but I find there is something more relaxing and satisfying than in painting other figures.
