Jonathan Freitag of Palouse Wargaming hosted the Rejects in playing the Battle of Trasimene. Hop over to his blog to get a fuller and better balanced report.
The title "swift and brutal" aptly describes the game and my part in it.
Steve and I were the Romans, with Steve as Flaminius and the vanguard under my command.
Lee and Ray commanded the Carthaginians.
The start of the battle. |
Flaminius, having survived the initial attacks out of the mist was able to organise some sort of defence. Meanwhile, the vanguard was being squeezed in the defile showing an inability to respond. |
Flaminius made a bold move to damage Hannibal's centre... |
... made a breakthrough... |
And so, with only two turns played the Romans suffered a swift and brutal defeat.
Steve as Flaminius played well. Alas, I did not do so in the defile. Kudos to the Carthaginians.
A quick but entertaining evening of remote gaming. Well done and thank you Jonathan.
Next week we will swap sides and once again enjoy Jonathan's fine company as host and umpire.
Short but no sweet for the Romans. I have not witnessed anything like that in a long time.
ReplyDeleteIt was a sight to behold.
DeleteThat seems quicker and more brutal than the actual battle itself Richard. How long did the game last in actual time?
ReplyDeleteI think it probably was. Playing time was about 1 hour 45mins.
DeleteYes, I wondered the same as Lawrence - in some games we play, two turns each might only be 30-45 minutes!
ReplyDeleteWe started at 7pm or just after, and the game was decided by around 8.45pm.
DeleteMy wife always says a good game is a fast game....but she isn't a wargamer!
DeleteLovely fast battle!
ReplyDeleteSpot on there Michal.
DeleteOh dear that was swift and brutal! At least you get a chance to play the other side, which I think this scenario requires, given it seems very one-sided when first looked at.
ReplyDeleteHopefully I will do better next time.
DeleteWow, that was quite something! Once those heavy infantry units get into a pursuit, things can get very bloody very quickly under these rules. Was it the other side rolling high, or you rolling low?(!). You will relish giving them the same treatment in the re-match, if you can!
ReplyDeleteBoth David. Me low, the other side high.
DeleteI did feel sorry for Richard, his dice rolling was quite abysmal, we on the other hand had our fair share of luck. A very quick but eventful and exciting game!
ReplyDeleteYour dice was extraordinary Ray.
DeleteThat's was over pretty quickly, in fact I think it came as much of a suprise to myself and Ray as it did to you. Your dice abandoned you and there was little you could do in the face of such appalling luck. You'll get an opportunity for revenge next week!
ReplyDeleteI don't know about revenge, just another good game will do.
DeleteWow, a brutal encounter and much like the historical battle
ReplyDeleteAs you say Neil.
DeleteThat was brutal! Sounds like luck deserted you Richard.
ReplyDeleteI must have offended Lady Luck.
DeleteWe all have days when the dice abandon us, sounds like you had one of those days!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain caveadsum1471
It sure was. But it all averages out over time... thankfully!
